Shannonside FM report: There are real fears that Leitrim may not have a representative at this year’s Rose of Tralee festival. So far, only three girls have come forward to take part in the Leitrim Rose contest for 2015, which is due to take place this Sunday at eight o’clock in the Bush Hotel.

Garda - 100 senior officers to be moved
Garda Commissioner Noirin O'Sullivan has ordered the biggest managerial shake-up in the force in living memory. As part of the radical re-organisaiton, up to 100 senior officers of superintendent and chief superintendent rank are to be moved, while a number of high profile units will be merged.
Bus Eireann to cut some services
This region is being spared from cuts for the moment. In an interview with the Irish Independent, chief executive Martin Nolan said Bus Éireann is losing thousands of euro everyday on routes with low passenger numbers. The company says that if the Government wants rural services to be saved – it will need to provide a subsidy.

Leitrim Observer report: Over 50 family doctors from the North West initially met in Donegal Town on February 12th last to discuss the threatened collapse of the NoWDOC service. The NoWDOC service based in Carrick-on-Shannon covers all of South Leitrim up to and including Drumkeerin, as well as parts of North Roscommon including Boyle, Strokestown, Elphin and Ballyfarnon. In all, there are 21 doctors involved.

Special offers for sunbeds in tanning shops are to be banned from next month. The Health Minister says it’s part of his plan to tackle the number of cases of skin and eye cancer.

Drop in government assisted employment
Government assisted employment in County Leitrim has dropped by 43.5% between 2004 and 2013. Western Development Commission figures indicate that 1,311 people work in IDA Ireland assisted companies, Enterprise Ireland or Údarás na Gaeltachta. This number is down from back in 2004 when almost 3,000 were assisted.
