I saw the film "Calvary" in Carrick Cineplex on Friday nigh. John Michael McDonagh wrote a story that could happen in real life today, it starts dramatically in a confession box, lays down possibilities and the unexpected story ending left me and other viewers silent and even stunned as they left the cinema. There is an excellent cast led by Brendan Gleeson, Chris O'Dowd and Kelly Reilly with appearances by Pat Shortt, Domhnall Gleeson, Aiden Gillen and others you will recognise. Calvary was filmed on the Sligo coast near Easkey and close to Ben Bulben, so the scenery is quite spectacular. Don't miss this one! View the trailer [here...]

Billy's World Firewalk Fundraiser

Last night, 36 brave souls walked barefoot approximately 10 metres across glowing wood embers as part of the Billy's World charity Fundraiser. All participants were given a comprehensive tutorial beforehand on how to firewalk, and as a result, no feet were burned. The event was a spectacular one at the car park behind the Landmark Hotel and was conducted under maximum safety conditions.
There was no trickery or magic involved - each of the 36 genuinely walked across a bed of glowing fire embers. Never was it more advised that you "Don't try this at home" ... without proper training.

St Patrick's Day Parade

Oh, what a beauty it was ... the streets along the parade route were 'chock-a-block' on a mild day (Sunday 16th) to view some of the very best displays by traders, clubs and organisations in the area. Some viewers were unaware that so many businesses and clubs exist in the area, proving, if proof were needed, that the St. Patrick's Day Parade is a vital one in the town. Crusade? ...

Many will be aware the I promote the idea that Carrick and Boyle are two neighbouring towns in a beautiful part of Ireland. I believe that it would benefit both towns greatly, if in some arenas, we were to promote and advertise jointly.
» We share a commonality, but are yet different in so many ways. In trading, attractions and other areas, what one town lacks, the other can supply. Both towns have excellent shops, the N4 and rail links. Boyle has King House, Boyle Abbey, its Musical Society, Civic Art Collection etc while Carrick has its hotels, cinema, swimming pool, The Dock etc., and all are no more than a 15 minute car journey from each other.
